Is Ledger Live necessary?

Do I need Ledger Live? Or what other ways can I easily and safely manage the funds in my cold wallet? I haven't purchased it yet, but I've already decided to do so next week. Has anyone downloaded the Ledger application? Is it a completely secure app?
