Evolution

Many of the general public are generally mistaken when they believe that some other types of arthropods such as centipedes, millipedes, spiders, and scorpions are insects since their external body shape is similar, as they all have an external skeleton fused together (as is the case with other types of arthropods), except When examined closely, clear signs of difference appear, the most prominent of which is that these species do not have six legs as adult insects. The history of arthropod lineages is still the subject of controversy and debate among scholars today. In 2008, researchers at Tufts University, near Boston, in the United States, unveiled what they believe is the oldest flying insect fossil in the world, a 300-million-year-old sample, that is, dating back to the Carboniferous period.

Evolution has led to the emergence of different shapes of antennae in many types of insects.
The oldest fossils that clearly belong to an insect were found in deposits dating back to the Devonian period. The age of this fossil reached 396 million years. It was called the “Rainey flint” after the Scottish village of Rayne, near which it was found. The insect found in it is known by the Latin name "Rhyniognatha hirsti". This type of insect had a lower jaw with two sections, a phenomenon that appears in winged insects, which assumes that wings in insects had evolved and appeared in that period, and this means that winged insects appeared some time before that, i.e. in the Silurian era.
